How to Find a Part-Time Job in NYC

Jobs and part time jobs -- no matter where you live -- are harder to come by these days. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that while unemployment jumped to 8.5% broader unemployment hit 15.6%.

New York City's job market is suffering in particular because of problems in the financial industry. Job cuts have left many people in search of employment. Lots of people are looking for both full time employment and part time jobs in New York. Some are looking to switch career paths altogether while others simply want to find part time work in order to stay adrift until the economy rebounds or other full time employment can be discovered.

Searching for a work be seem intimidating, but don't stress. Below, I'll provide a three part process that has helped others find the part time work they needed. And remember: New York may be a tough place sometimes, but it's also the city of dreams. Just around the next corner, yours might be waiting, so don't give up.

Part 1: What are your real job requirements?

Do you require health coverage? Are you responsible just for yourself or does your family depend on your income? Are you restricted to a certain area of the city? Can you take day jobs or night jobs or are you flexible?

These questions are all factors you'll want to consider when searching for part time employment. Having a family may make it more difficult to relocate somewhere else, so finding work close to home might be top priority. Maybe you have kids or are restricted for medical reasons. Many nationwide retailers such as Starbucks, Target, and IKEA offer health insurance for part time employees. Some require you to work a minimum amount of hours in order to receive these benefits, so do your research before settling for a position that may not meet your needs.

If you need to work at night then consider pursuing a job which allows you to work from home in New York. There are data entry jobs or medical billing jobs which allow you to work out of your home. Or you could put those data entry skills to use at a hospital or other facility that is open 24 hours.

Part 2: What's your dream gig?

Just about every field imaginable has part time opportunities. Sit down and start brainstorming about yourself. What are your likes/dislikes, hobbies, interests, and talents? Let's say you were an English major and you have a love of literature. Perhaps a bookstore would be a suitable fit for you. Another great part time job for English buffs: side work as an editor.

Do you enjoy being around children? Schools in NYC are usually in need of substitute teachers. The nice thing about both those jobs is that they're highly flexible allowing you time to continue searching for more permanent work or giving you the time off you desire. Either way, dedicate some time getting reacquainted with yourself in order to find a job suitable for you.

Part 3: Be Confident and Network, Network, Network

Warning shy folks: Now is the time to get out of your comfort zone a little bit. In tough economic times, we simply don't have the luxury of crawling into a shell and living the life of a hermit. Now is when people need to help each other, and here's the good news. You'll be surprised how willing people are to help.

First determine the opportunities you want to pursue. Then, psyche yourself up by listing all the great qualities you have to offer a potential employer. Review your resume and think about why each of your previous employers chose to hire you. Basically, you're getting ready to sell yourself to employers.

Now, it's time to put the word out to former co-workers, friends, family, members of any groups or religious organizations you belong to, and even past bosses that you have a good relationship with. Remember, even if someone doesn't have an opportunity for you, they may know someone else who does.

New York City is one of the best places to search for work because of the variety and limitless number of connections. The more people you talk to about your search, the more assistance you will receive along your way. As you talk to people, stay confident. Remember keeping a high self esteem is both healthy for you and a key to attracting opportunity. No one wants to be around a "down" person and no one will want to hire you if you don't value yourself.

Another key to landing a great part time job is honesty. Employers will be focused on your skills in communication and teamwork, and honesty is the foundation for both. Plus, you don't want to land the perfect opportunity only to lose it when someone finds out you fibbed about something that wasn't even as important as you had imaged.

The more you can project these qualities to those around you, the more likely people will assist you. Think of yourself as a product that you want to market. How would you go about making yourself look like an attractive investment?

Landing a part time job doesn't have to be an experience that overwhelms you. By taking the measures mentioned above, you can find one of the many New York part time jobs that are just waiting to be found.
