If you decided to take a poll on how many kids who don't like math it would be skewed. Math is one of those subjects that has to be taught, it's fundamental for anybody who adds or subtracts from their checking account. Most kids don't see a need for math when they are learning so making it fun is a real challenge.

I had a math teacher who explained math in these simple terms. You can only do four things in math. Add, subtract, multiply and divide, this applies all the way to college algebra. Before those words were spoken I spent countless hours with a professional Queens geometry tutor but it never seemed to help because I had doomed myself to never learn math.

In order to have fun with math you should eliminate word problems, those are just too confusing. Instead work with problems that kids can relate to. Ask questions within the class and see if they know any math problems that they cannot figure out. There is a time for testing to see who needs help but pop quizzes should be taken out of the equation.

If a child does need help the kids who are more advanced in math can be a math tutor in Queens to the kids who need help. When peers help each other out it creates a fun learning environment. Nobody wants to be sitting at the back of the class if they need to be sitting at the front. Students are great mentors if they are given the chance to encourage because math is challenging enough.

There are several math games that you can play to encourage kids that math can be fun. If a child likes words more than numbers try to incorporate problems that deal with both. On the other hand, if a child only likes numbers then give them the raw data. Most teachers don't ask about how children learn they just accept that math must be taught as a requirement.

Some companies that help kids who a struggling with math have unique learning ideas. Its best to find out what a child's hobby is and go from there, when kids find an association with math they begin to understand the correlation between learning and applying knowledge. Tapping into that key element is the difference between an A and C student.

Although math is often a one shot deal meaning kids get it or they don't you should really look at how math can be used in everyday situations. Have the students come up with math problems that they all solve together or use as competition within groups. If a child has a solid grasp of math they will succeed in other areas as well.

I used to love math when I was in school, and was really good at it too! But now its all a blur because I hardly ever use it.

@pressingon, thanks. It's easy to become rusty when you don't use a certain skill on a regular basis, as certainly applies to math.
